Message from Mariamma P V

Teaching Hindi to young children has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. I remember a particular incident early in my career at Kodaikanal Public School that has stayed with me ever since. There was a quiet little girl who was very hesitant to speak during lessons. One day, during a class storytelling session, she surprised everyone by volunteering to read aloud a passage in Hindi. Her voice was soft at first, but with each sentence, her confidence grew, and by the end, she was beaming with pride. That moment showed me how powerful encouragement and a safe learning space can be in helping children find their voice.

Over my 26 years of teaching, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing many such transformations. Whether it’s helping a student struggling with reading or encouraging a shy child to participate, these moments remind me why teaching is so special.

As Section-in-Charge at Sacred Heart, I see every day how important it is to support not only academic growth but emotional well-being as well. Teaching Hindi is not just about language—it’s about building confidence, culture, and communication skills that empower children for life.

Thank you for trusting me with your children’s early years of learning. Together, we’re nurturing not just learners but confident, curious individuals ready to embrace the world.

MIDDLE SCHOOL (6-8) HEADTEACHER

Mrs. Letha John

Head Teacher – Secondary School (Grades 8–10)

A Journey of 29 Years, Countless Lessons, and Endless Laughter

Mrs. Letha John has been a cherished part of the SHPS Kottayam family since 1997. With a Master’s degree in Malayalam, a Bachelor of Education, and the State Eligibility Test qualification, she brings nearly three decades of experience, along with an infectious passion for teaching and storytelling.

Over the years, she has been more than just a teacher. She has been a mentor, a cultural guide, a motivator, a poet at heart—and the proud “Malayalam Ma’am” who can turn even a grammar lesson into a memory. Her classrooms are filled with laughter, lively discussions, meaningful silence, and the occasional surprise activity that has students talking about her class long after the bell rings.

It is this ability to make learning both joyful and deeply personal that defines her leadership as Head Teacher for the Secondary Section.

Whenever someone asks me how I have remained in teaching for twenty-nine years, I usually laugh and say, “You should spend one week in my classroom—you will know!”

The truth is, I never stopped enjoying it. Malayalam has never felt like a syllabus to me—it has always been a part of life. Every poem we study has a story behind it, and every student brings a new way of looking at that story.

I remember one rainy day—we were halfway through a serious unit on Kumaran Asan. The students were restless. So I told them to put their books away. We spent the next twenty minutes writing our own poems about the rain. Some were emotional, some were hilarious (“Ma’am, my umbrella has more holes than my attendance record!”), but all were genuine. And that, to me, is the magic of language—it brings people together, especially when you least expect it.

One of my favourite memories is the day I walked into class wearing a sari printed with Malayalam alphabets—a birthday gift from a former student. The moment I stepped in, one child shouted, “Ma’am, have you come to take class or conduct an exam?” Another said, “You look like the walking Malayalam dictionary!” We all laughed. But that moment led to something special—the class began asking questions about the origin of certain letters, and we ended up having one of our best impromptu discussions on script evolution. All from a sari!

And then there are moments that truly stay with you. Like the time a very quiet boy, who barely made eye contact for most of the year, asked to read a poem aloud. He was nervous, but the class listened so intently. When he finished, there was a small pause—and then a spontaneous round of applause. It was not about perfect pronunciation. It was about courage. That is the kind of growth I treasure most.

Message from Mrs. Sindhu T.R.

Welcome to the world of Mathematics at Sacred Heart! Some people say Maths is the “language of the universe.” I say it’s also the “language of life”—sometimes full of tough problems, but always solvable if you take it step by step. Over my 28 years of teaching, I’ve heard every kind of Maths story from students. One once told me, “Ma’am, numbers are fine… but why did the alphabet have to join the party?” Another swore that algebra was invented only to torture teenagers. And during an exam, a child whispered to me, “If sin²θ + cos²θ = 1, can I also write ma’am² + sir² = teacher²?” (I had to laugh before gently saying, “Nice try, but no marks for creativity there!”).

But here’s the truth: Maths is not just about numbers on a page. It’s about learning how to think clearly, spot patterns, and find solutions. And sometimes, yes, it’s about laughing at our own silly mistakes. Because every wrong answer is really just another step towards the right one.

Think about it:

Life is like a quadratic equation—sometimes it has two solutions, sometimes one, and sometimes… no real solution at all.

Friendship is like parallel lines—they run together forever but sadly, never meet. And success? That’s simple—it’s directly proportional to your effort. Increase one, and you automatically increase the other. In my classroom, I don’t just want you to “do the sums.” I want you to see how Maths is everywhere: in cricket scores, in the rhythm of your favourite song, in the symmetry of nature, even in splitting the last slice of cake equally among friends (a very important real-life problem!). So here’s my advice to you: Don’t fear Maths. Befriend it. Play with it. Ask questions, make mistakes, laugh at them, and then try again. Maths isn’t about making you feel small; it’s about showing you that you’re capable of solving big things. Together, let’s turn every minus into a plus, every problem into a possibility, and every “I can’t” into an “Of course I can!” Here’s to adding more joy, multiplying your confidence, subtracting your fears, and dividing success equally among all of us!
